  14.         QVT is a program for IBM PC's and compatibles which fully
  15.         emulates the DEC VT series of terminals, including the VT52,
  16.         VT100/102, and VT220. In addition to terminal emulation,
  17.         QVT also allows the user to perform file transfers using
  18.         the Kermit, Xmodem, Ymodem, and Zmodem protocols, and offers
  19.         conveniences such as auto-dial and auto-login. Support for
  20.         external file-transfer protocols is also available.
  21.  
  22.         Though it may be used as a general-purpose PC communications
  23.         program, QVT excels when used to carry on interactive sessions
  24.         with host computers which require the use of DEC terminals,
  25.         such as the DEC VAX. In this context, QVT provides high per-
  26.         formance, extremely rigorous emulation, and convenient mapping
  27.         of the DEC keyboard to the PC keyboard.

  29.         QVT will run on all IBM Personal Computers and PS/2's. All IBM
  30.         display systems are supported, including EGA, MCGA, and VGA.

  33.         Installation
  34.         ------------

  36.         The files included in this package are:
  37.  
  38.         QVT_BBS.EXE             the QVT executable
  39.         QVT.HLP                 an on-line help file
  40.         QVT_KB.MAP              a keyboard map file
  41.         DEFAULT.VT              a model configuration file

  43.         We recommend that a directory be created on your hard drive
  44.         where these files can be placed. If you wish to use QVT from
  45.         anywhere on your hard drive with no loss of convenience, you
  46.         should create an environment variable 'VT_DIR', and assign
  47.         to it the name of that directory. This 'SET' command should
  48.         be included in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  51.         User Interface
  52.         --------------
  53.  
  54.         The QVT user interface is simple and consistent. All commands
  55.         (with two minor exceptions) are accessed through a group of
  56.         pull-down menus; the headings of these menus are displayed
  57.         in the menu bar across the top of the screen. To invoke a
  58.         menu, press the <Alt> key together with the first letter of
  59.         the menu. At the left side of the menu bar is the '■' symbol;
  60.         this is the 'System' menu, and is invoked with the combination
  61.         <Alt-X>.

  63.         After a pull-down menu has been invoked, you may select one
  64.         of its options by moving the highlight bar to the desired
  65.         item, then pressing the <Enter> key. You can also select a
  66.         menu option by pressing the key that corresponds to the first
  67.         capitalized letter in the item label.

  69.         If you wish to cancel a menu without selecting any of its items,
  70.         press the <Esc> key.

  124.         Configuring QVT
  125.         ---------------
  126.  
  127.         To change QVT's operating parameters, perform the following
  128.         procedure:
  129.  
  130.         1. Invoke the 'Settings' menu, then select the 'Terminal'
  131.         or 'Communications' option.
  132.  
  133.         2. When these options are selected, a new popup window will
  134.         be displayed which shows a portion of QVT's current operating
  135.         values.
  136.  
  137.         3. To change one of these values, use the arrow keys to move
  138.         the cursor to the desired item, then repeatedly press the
  139.         <GreyPlus> key to step through the available values.
  140.  
  141.         4. When all displayed values are as you want them, press the
  142.         <Return> key to erase the window, then press <Esc> again to
  143.         erase the 'Settings' menu.

  146.         The sample config file, DEFAULT.VT, includes comments which
  147.         briefly explain all of QVT's configurable parameters.
  148.         DEFAULT.VT is a plain ASCII text file, and may be printed or
  149.         viewed with any standard text editor or browser.

  152.         Modem Setup
  153.         -----------
  154.  
  155.         QVT is designed to work with Hayes-compatible modems. In order
  156.         for QVT's auto-dial feature to work properly, your modem must
  157.         be configured such that the CD and DTR indicators are NOT
  158.         forced on by the modem. Instead, the CD indicator should be
  159.         set to track with the carrier from the remote modem, and the
  160.         DTR indicator should be set to respond to the presence of a DTR
  161.         signal from the PC.
  162.  
  163.         On the Hayes Smartmodem 1200, these configurations are performed
  164.         by setting switches 1 and 6 to the UP position. On the Hayes 2400
  165.         modem, the commands 'AT&C1' and 'AT&D2' should be used. If you
  166.         are not using a Hayes modem, consult your modem's owner's manual
  167.         as to how to achieve this configuration.

  169.         You should also make sure that your modem has result codes
  170.         enabled.  The Hayes command to do this is 'ATQ' or 'ATQ0'.

  173.         Modem Initialization
  174.         --------------------
  175.  
  176.         For Hayes 2400-type modems, we recommend the following
  177.         initialization string:
  178.  
  179.         init=atq0e0v0x4&c2&d2^M
  180.  
  181.         For Hayes 1200 modems:
  182.  
  183.         init=ATQ0E0V0^M
  184.  
  185.         QVT does NOT automatically place a carriage return at the
  186.         end of the modem initialization string.  If your modem requires
  187.         a carriage return as a command terminator (as do most modems),
  188.         you must put one at the end of your initialization string,
  189.         using the notation '^M' (as in the above example).

  191.         Though QVT allows you to supply a dialing command string,
  192.         you will not need one for Hayes-compatible modems. Unless you
  193.         have a non-Hayes-compatible modem, leave the 'dialprefix'
  194.         parameter blank.
